I don’t think it’s an accident that the word “art” is contained within “heart”. Art is good for the heart. It’s good medicine. I am learning that art comes in many different forms. There is beauty all around, if only we slow down enough to notice. I’ve been enjoying the spring trees and flowers in bloom. They are so pretty that I had to take pictures!
Here is a tree in my backyard, in fullness of pink glory:
Isn’t it beautiful? I get happy just looking at it.
Here is the lilac tree in my front yard.
I can smell its fragrance as soon as I step outside!
I continue to explore art through painting. I recently found a new book from the library called, “A Daring Adventure in Painting”. It has opened up a whole new world to me! The colors alone inspire me. I have been anxious to try out some of the techniques and finally got to experiment a little yesterday. I have a basic paint set with basic colors: red, yellow, green, blue, black, white. It’s nothing fancy. I had no idea what would happen when I combined colors! I had delirious fun this weekend mixing and painting. I made vibrant colors like raspberry, turquoise, cantaloupe. Who knew this could be so much fun? Here is one of the pictures I created:
I call it, “Look at the Birds”, after the passage in Matthew: “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? (Matt. 6:26)
Aren’t those birds the cutest? Before you go thinking I drew them by hand, let me explain. I picked up these really cute bird placements a while back at IKEA for about $1 each. I used tracing paper to outline the shape of the birds and then used graphite paper to trace them onto my canvas. Now, I did paint them with all my newfound fabulous colors! But, for real…if I can do this, anyone can be an artist. Half the fun is looking around your house for inspiration and things you can incorporate into your painting. I collaged some bird scrapbook paper onto my canvas in between the layers of paint. I am still working out ways to get wording on a painting. This one is traced and then gone over with an artist pen.
Hope this small sampling from my artistic adventure inspires you to begin yours. You were made by the Greatest Artist – the Creator of the Universe! Don’t listen to the nonsense in your head about not being creative. You were created by the Creator of Creativity. He has given you a unique artistry to share in the world. Be who He’s made you to be. It’s so much more fun! Music, dance, photography, painting, cooking, homemaking, gardening, quilting, origami. Whatever. There are no limitations on what is defined as “art”. The possibilities are endless. If you don’t know where to begin, try looking at the birds…..and know that you are much more valuable to God. You were made on purpose for a purpose…His. Trust Him and Take heART!
