Lily of the Lord

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?” (1 Corinthians 6:19).

This phrase “Lily of the Lord” is an expression of one of my favorites preachers from long ago, Oswald Chambers. He used this term in reference to the temple King Solomon had constructed for the Lord. The temple was built with the finest of materials. Solomon spared no expense in each detail. The temple was ornately carved in fine detail with symbols of beauty such as pomegranates and the lily. “A network of interwoven chains festooned the capitals on top of the pillars….He made pomegranates in two rows encircling each network to decorate the capitols on tops of the pillars…The capitols…were in the shape of lilies, four cubits high” (1 Kings 7:17-19).

We are God’s temple today, through the indwelling Holy Spirit.  Oswald used this expression, “Lily of the Lord” in reference to a woman who is willing to allow God to carve in the details of her life. She is a woman whose love and devotion to God leads her to open her whole self to His shaping Hand. A Lily of the Lord trusts God to make her as beautiful and ornate as Solomon’s temple in all of its splendor.

I painted this picture with the thought of being a Lily of the Lord combined with a Word the Lord spoke to me earlier this year. The Word was, “Like a lily among thorns is my darling among the maidens” (Song of Songs 2:2).

I shared my “thorn” story in a previous post. This painting includes the thoughts expressed there. If you missed the thorn post, you can read it here:  http://www.robynterry.com/2013/08/16/crown-him-with-many-thorns/

A Lily of the Lord chooses to let go of bitter past and present circumstances. She accepts the struggle and the barren conditions in which she lives. She believes the Lord is leading her faithfully to become all He has designed her to be. She lives by faith alone.

Bloom where you are planted, fairest Lily of the Lord. Fear not when the heat comes, nor the drought. Your leaves are always green. Send your roots deep into the Fount of Living Water within you. She who drinks of Him will never be thirsty. The water He gives wells up a spring of eternal life in you. A Lily of the Lord is an exquisite beauty. She spreads the sweet fragrance of Christ wherever she goes. She is the strongest evidence of a personal and loving God. Her life displays His glory with all of creation.  Behold, the Lily of the Lord….His crowning glory.

“Not even Solomon is all his splendor was dressed like one of these” (Matthew 6:29).

  1. Mary, Thank you…your encouragement is milk and honey to my heart! I am still so emotional from yesterday, trying to process it all. But I know this…you were a gift there. I was so blessed to get to know you and I look forward to our next time together. :) Let’s plan that soon, you are in my prayers, sister. Love, Robyn

  2. Your writing is beautiful. True milk and honey for the broken heart and bruised soul. Thank you for blessing me this morning. Your blog speaks truth and peace through God’s word.

  3. Janelle, Please know you have ministered to me too in taking the time to comment on my post. How God does that is so mysterious and beautiful. He knows us – what we need to spur us on toward love and good deeds. We rejoice, even in our sufferings, for we know these momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. Therefore we do not lose heart…we heed the prophetic words of Jesus, “Take heart, daughter….your faith has healed you” Love, Robyn

  4. I cannot begin to express to you this morning how this ministered to my soul. In prayer on my way to work this morning I ask God specifically for help and understanding. You will not know what you have done to encourage my soul; I was not down on the faithfulness of God, but rather on the fact of the struggles in life. I have complete faith in God that He knows what He is doing and that He is working all things out for my good, but this physical flesh is becoming weary in well doing. Thank you for obeying the Spirit and writing this for us today!

Much love & in HIS will,
